Product Description
NOVICA, in association with National Geographic, offers thousands of limited edition and one-of-a-kind gifts, jewelry, and home decor treasures handmade by master artists and artisans throughout the world. Exotic cinnamon hues makes of this swing the ideal addition to a summer's garden. The swing's spicy colorings are well complemented by mahogany's natural grain. Woven by hand of nylon in traditional looms, this hammock evidences the care of the Maya Artists of the Yucatan. Hammocks have long been used in the Yucatan peninsula instead of beds, for they are cooler to sleep in. Moreover, as the Maya people used to say, "they are as comfortable as a mother's embrace. 100% nylon. Extra large ropes and hammock hooks included for easy installation. A step-by-step manual is included for easy installation, as well as care instructions. NOTE: Because each hammock is woven individually by hand, measurements may vary by as much as ten centimeters. There may be slight color variations from hammock to hammock. Artisan Info: Long before the Spanish arrived upon the coasts of the Yucatan Peninsula, the Maya preferred to sleep and rest in hammocks. They considered the hammock to be like the loving embrace of a mother, due to the comfortable manner in which the body is held and swung within its cradle. Maya Artists of the Yucatan seek to preserve time-honored customs while also offering stylized versions of the original Maya hammock. For them, the hammock is a work of art. Their hammocks are
Reader Reviews
We purchased this hanging chair for our living room. I wanted something to match my red decor. I suppose the color could be called a dusty pink, but it's dusty enough that it works with my reds. I'm very happy with it's looks compared to other chairs out there. The cord that it is made of appears to be nylon. Very silky and smooth to the touch. This is very pleasant to touch, BUT.... If you sit on this with pants that have a rear pocket and BUTTON closure, the button WILL catch on the fine cording. (You have to scoot around in this chair a bit to get comfortable and rear buttons are bound to catch, even if unbuttoned.) The real problem arises when you get up and walk away: you will pull that single cord with you, and before you even feel it you will have created a 2 foot long SNAG, which is impossible to put back into the hammock's weave gracefully. Such a snag (even a smaller one) creates a visually obvious zig zag in the weave that I've not been able to get rid of. I dare say that this snagging is so effortless, that it is unavoidable. With great care MAYBE it could be avoided. The chair is comfortable and adaptable to sit in. However again the snagging problem is an issue, because a snag will create a noticeable tightness from side to side, along the length of an adjacent cord that has become tighter. The first time I felt this, it was like leaning back into a chair that someone has left a ski pole laying across. It's gotten comfortable again since then: I think the tightness has eased a bit, and also been "balanced" by a number of other snags! I still notice the tight spots a bit when getting into the chair, but they don't bother me when sitting in it. If I were to do it again, I would seriously consider a white cotton chair (such as the Outback Charleston Rope Chair), in the hopes of avoiding the snagging problem. Cotton isn't slippery. I imagine it might snag a little, but I'd be quite surprised if it could tighten adjacent strands. Despite this annoying issue, I do love the look of it, and it is still a pleasure to sit in. Since I cannot picture any other chair "working" in my decor, I still love this chair. Advice if you buy this or any other NYLON hammock chair: don't mount it so high off the ground that you have to jump out of the chair (which is precisely how I have mine--to get full view of my garden through a window). And of course, if you've got anything snag-able on, stand up slowly and unhook yourself completely before walking away!
