REVIEW:Front-tine tillers are perfect for working with relatively loose soil or soil that's been tilled before. As a good rule of thumb, if you can grab a handful of your soil without having to dig and scrape with your fingertips, then this kind of tiller will work fine. If not, you'll want to get a heavier-duty, rear-tine model (see Yard Machines' model #21AA413J700).
If your soil passes the test, and if you're working with an area of less than 5,000 square feet, the Tecumseh gives you efficient and powerful tilling. The rear-mounted wheels make it easy to move around, and the front-mounted, forward-rotating tines actually pull the tiller along as you go. The 5.5 HP engine will give you all the power you need.
One nice feature of this model is the adjustable till width. You can go from 13 to 22 to 24 inches; use the widest setting for open spaces, then dial down to get into the corners. The tiller also includes an adjustable depth bar, and the tines are self-sharpening and heat-treated for longevity.
This model has a couple of important safety features, too. First, the comfortable handle has an engagement lever mounted to it that must be depressed in order to engage the blades. In other words, if you let go of the tiller, it's not going to crash through the fence and into your neighbor's yard. Second, it's got a 24-inch tine shield that helps protect against rocks and debris that get kicked up by the tines (even so, you should always wear safety goggles when using a tiller).
