It's been over five years since I had a new blade on the ol' bow saw, so it was time to make that investment (and hang the old one in the shed, as a spare). I figured, you know, saw teeth are saw teeth, old or new, right? Nope, not the case. After five years that factory paint may have been buffed off with the thousands of strokes you've put down, and those teeth may still be pointy and (relatively) sharp, and they'll run through a green wild cherry branch in five deep strokes, but that ain't nothing compared to a brand-new blade. I know. Watch yourself, because it'll bite ya. Almost as an afterthought I decided to put my leather gloves on. It was hot the other day, close to 100, and a nice warm pair of gloves wasn't really what I was after. But as much as I was sweating, I wanted the sure grip of the gloves, and I'd always taught the boy to wear gloves when working with timber and tools, be it an axe, maul, hatchet, or saw. Can't be a hypocrite, because you never know when that kid will be watching you. It was three strokes into a freshly-cut six-inch cypress limb, the blade about 3/4" into the wood. As I drew back, for whatever reason that saw hopped out of its groove like a golf ball on a concrete floor, and as my right hand pushed it forward for another go, it came right on down on my left wrist (yeah, maybe I was holding the branch a bit too close). Before I could stop, that brand-new Bahco North America 23-30 had put a 3-inch gash through the leather of the glove like nothing, right on through the nylon lining, and had just started to slice my now exposed wrist. If I'd not been wearing my gloves, I would have had a wicked, wicked injury to contend with, most definitely a trip to the hospital, stitches, tetanus shot, the whole fun package. This is no slam on this product; in fact, its an endorsement of its out-of-the-box sharpness and quality. That's exactly what I want, what I expected, and what I paid for. All I've got to say, is that if you've got the requisite safety equipment, and somewhere inside you that little voice is asking if maybe you ought to be using it, then the right way to go is to listen.
